Cuba is a photographers dream with vibrant colors, incredible old world architecture, friendly people and a thriving music and dance culture. It is a country rich with history and undefinable allure. This Caribbean island has endured so much but continues to grow and fight through producing some of the worlds greatest art, music, dance and food. Cuba is indeed a country with a lot of heart and soul.  

If you're interested in starting your photography career, want to polish up your Instagram photos or are a more advanced photographer working on your portfolio this experience is for you. We will work on composition, lighting and technique honing in on your individual style. There will be one on one sessions with Julia along with group critiques.

FULL ITINERARY:

Day 1: Arrival to Havana

After airport pickup and settling into our Casa Particulares, we will meet for introductory dinner. We will head to bed early for a good night’s sleep! (D)

Hotel: Old Havana

Day 2: Exploring Old Havana, Cars & Malecon

After breakfast we will have and initial photo presentation and slideshow by workshop leader, Julia Cumes. The slideshow presentation. "Beyond the Snapshot", will introduce attendees to some travel photography techniques and approaches and provide inspiration for the upcoming photo tour. Later, we will take a tour of the city in classic 1950’s vehicles of the main Havana historical sites: Plaza de la Revolución, Colon Cemetery, Malecon, Plaza Vieja. At sunset, we will walk the malecon to see a glimpse of real Havana life: young people, musicians and couples all hanging out. (B,D)

Day 3: Dance!

We will be up early for a sunrise shoot, catching the best light to photograph Old Havana on foot. The morning will be spent wandering the streets with Julia capturing images of the culture of Havana. After breakfast we depart to photograph a 2 different dance company rehearsals. (2-3 hrs) There will be time edit after. In the late afternoon we head to a salsa class. Dinner will be inside Fabrica de Arte, an old power plant that now is an art gallery and club. This is an incredible venue to look at Cuban art, photography and experimental performers! There is also an optional night out to the famed 1830 salsa club. Day 4: Zapata National Park & Playa Larga

An hour and a half from Havana we will enter Zapata National Park. Here is where the famous “Bay of Pigs” invasion took place in 1961. We will have a memorable farm to table lunch before arriving to this small village. Today is a great opportunity to photograph nature and landscapes. In the afternoon there will be opportunity for swimming and snorkeling in the crystal clear Caribbean waters. (B,L,D)

Day 5: Playa Larga and Community

After breakfast we will head over to a local school to have a “mini” photography class with the little ones. They will learn how to make solar prints which they can take home with them! Don’t worry- you will have some free time at the beach but don’t remember to be out shooting during the “golden light.” (B,D)

Day 6: Transfer to Trinidad

From here we head to Trinidad. Trinidad is incredibly photogenic and colorful and is also a UNESCO heritage site. We will arrive in the afternoon just in time to explore the streets, stores, artisans, markets, and locals with Julia, making use of the beautiful golden hour light and focus on its colorful buildings, historical architecture and old world culture. Free night to practice those salsa moves at a local Salsa Bar. Day 7: Final Edits, Critiques & Slideshow

Today will be spent wrapping up the photographic journey of Cuba. You will have time to do your final edits and shooting while Julia prepares the slideshow. Lunch will be on your own and if you choose you can explore the waterfalls, hikes and nature in the area. In the evening we will have our final dinner and slideshow! Day 8: Departures from Santa Clara

Check out your Accommodations and depart for Santa Clara. Head to airport for 1pm flights. (B)
